Why Cold Air Comes Out of a Heat Vent
You set the thermostat to 70. The system kicks on. And what comes out of the register is room temperature at best, cold at worst. It's the most common no-heat call we run in October and November, and it almost never means the furnace is dead.
Here's what's worth knowing before you panic. A gas furnace has two separate jobs handled by two different parts. The burners make heat. The blower moves air. When those two get out of sync, you get air with no heat in it. The blower is running fine, which is why the system sounds completely normal. The heat side just isn't doing its part, or isn't being asked to.
Four things cause this in the overwhelming majority of cases. Two of them you can fix yourself in about five minutes. Work through them in this order, cheapest first.
Start With the Thermostat Fan Setting
This fixes more calls than anything else on the list, and it costs nothing.
Your thermostat has a fan setting with two positions, AUTO and ON. On AUTO, the blower only runs when the furnace is actually making heat. On ON, the blower runs constantly, all day, whether the burners are lit or not. Room temperature air moving across your skin feels cold. That's the whole mystery.
Somebody bumps that switch during a filter change. Or it got left on ON back in July to keep air circulating in the summer, and nobody thought about it again until the weather turned. Flip it to AUTO and give it an hour. If the air coming out is hot during a cycle and the vents go quiet between cycles, you're done. Go do something else.
Smart thermostats hide this setting a level or two deep in a menu, usually under Fan or System. Same two options, same fix.
Then Check the Filter
A filter packed solid with dust starves the furnace of airflow. Less air moving across the heat exchanger means the metal gets hotter than it should, and a safety switch shuts the burners down before anything gets damaged. The blower keeps running to cool things off. So you get a burst of warm air, then a long stretch of cold air, over and over.
Pull the filter out and hold it up to a light. If you can't see light through it, that's your problem. A new one is ten or fifteen bucks at any hardware store, and the change takes two minutes.
While you're there, note the date. If you can't remember the last time you changed it, that's an answer. We wrote up how often the filter actually needs changing here, and the honest answer depends more on your house than on the box the filter came in. Pets, allergies, and construction dust all shorten it.
One warning. If a clogged filter has been tripping the limit switch for weeks, the furnace has been running hot repeatedly. Changing the filter fixes the cause, but it's worth having somebody look at it if the cycling doesn't stop within a day.
The Flame Sensor Problem
Now we're into the stuff you probably shouldn't do yourself, though it helps enormously to know the name of it before somebody quotes you a price.
A flame sensor is a thin metal rod sitting in the burner flame. Its only job is to confirm the flame is actually there. If it doesn't sense a flame within a few seconds of the gas valve opening, the furnace shuts the gas off. That's a good design. Nobody wants unburned gas filling a basement.
The problem is that the rod builds up a film of residue over years of use. Eventually it can't detect a flame that's right in front of it. So the furnace lights, runs for three to five seconds, then shuts down. It may try again two or three times before locking out entirely. Meanwhile the blower runs and you get cold air.
This is the single most common repair we make on a no-heat call, and it's usually a cleaning, not a replacement. If a technician tells you the flame sensor is dirty, that's a believable and cheap answer. If somebody looks at the same symptom and quotes you a control board or a new furnace without checking the sensor first, get a second opinion.
The tell is timing. Lights, runs a few seconds, quits, tries again. That pattern points at the flame sensor before it points anywhere expensive. If instead your system runs a few minutes and shuts off over and over, that's a different problem, and we covered it in what causes a system to short cycle.
Go Look at the Vents Outside
High-efficiency furnaces vent through white PVC pipes that come out the side of the house, usually two of them, one pulling combustion air in and one pushing exhaust out. They're often close to the ground.
Things end up in them. We have pulled out wasp nests, mouse nests, leaves, and more snow than you would think could pack itself into a two inch pipe. When either pipe is blocked, a pressure switch senses it and refuses to let the burners light. The furnace won't run, or it'll try and quit.
Walk outside and look. Clear anything obvious, gently, and check that snow or mulch isn't piled against the openings. This becomes the whole ballgame in January, but the wasp nest version of it shows up in the fall, which is right about now. It's worth two minutes of your time before you pay anybody a diagnostic fee for something sitting on the outside of your house.
If your furnace vents up a metal flue through the chimney instead of out the wall through PVC, you've got a standard efficiency unit and this particular check doesn't apply the same way. You still want to make sure nothing's obstructing the chimney, but that's not a walk-outside-and-look job. Leave that one to somebody with the right equipment.
When It's Worth Calling Somebody
Stop troubleshooting and call if any of these are true. You smell gas, at all, anywhere. The furnace is making a boom or bang when it lights. You've got water pooling around the unit. Or you've worked the list above and the air is still cold.
Also call if the house is dropping below the mid fifties and it's genuinely cold outside. Frozen pipes cost far more than any furnace repair, and that math isn't close.
When somebody does come out, here's what a straight visit looks like. They check the filter and the thermostat before touching anything expensive. They pull and inspect the flame sensor. They test the gas valve and the pressure switches. And if they tell you a part failed, they show you the part.
