Where the Light Is and How to Read It
Your furnace has been telling you what's wrong the whole time. Most people don't know to look.
Pull the front access panel off the furnace. Somewhere on the control board, usually toward the bottom, there's a small LED. Sometimes it's behind a little plastic window so you can see it with the panel on. When the furnace is running normally it either sits solid or blinks a slow steady rhythm. When something has gone wrong, it blinks a pattern.
That pattern is a diagnostic code. Two quick flashes then a pause then two more. Or three fast, one slow. Or a steady rapid flash. Each pattern means something specific, and the manufacturer printed the legend on a sticker inside the access panel door.
Read that sticker. This matters more than it sounds, because the codes are not standardized across brands. A three flash code on a Carrier does not mean the same thing as three flashes on a Goodman or a Lennox. Anybody who tells you a code means one universal thing without looking at your unit is guessing.
Watch it for a full minute before you decide what the pattern is. Codes repeat on a cycle with a pause in between, and it's easy to miscount if you only watch for ten seconds. Get your phone out and take a video. Then count the flashes on playback.
If your furnace predates roughly the mid nineties, it may not have a diagnostic light at all. Older units used a pilot light and mechanical controls, and there's no board to report anything. In that case the troubleshooting is all physical, and it's harder to do from the outside. Worth knowing before you go hunting for an LED that was never there.
What the Common Codes Point At
Every brand words it differently, but the underlying failures cluster into a short list. Nearly everything you'll see falls into one of these:
- Pressure switch open or stuck. The furnace can't confirm that exhaust is venting properly, so it refuses to light. Extremely common in the fall and winter.
- Failed ignition or ignition lockout. The furnace tried to light, couldn't confirm a flame, and gave up after several attempts.
- Flame sensed when it shouldn't be. Usually a gas valve or sensor issue.
- Limit switch open. Something got too hot. Almost always airflow, and almost always a filter.
- Rollout switch open. Flame went somewhere it shouldn't. This one is not a wait and see.
- Low flame sense signal. The flame sensor is dirty and struggling to detect a flame that's right there.
Notice how many of those are cheap. A dirty flame sensor, a clogged filter, a blocked drain line. The scary sounding codes and the expensive repairs are not the same set.
The Pressure Switch Code, Explained
This is the code we get called about most, so it's worth understanding what it actually means.
Before the burners light, a small motor called the inducer pulls air through the furnace to clear out the exhaust path. A pressure switch confirms that airflow is happening. No confirmation, no gas. It's a safety interlock and it's doing exactly what it's supposed to do when it trips.
The switch itself is rarely the problem. What's usually wrong is something upstream of it:
- A clogged condensate drain line. High-efficiency furnaces make water, and when the drain backs up the water blocks the pressure path. This is probably the number one cause and it's often a ten minute fix.
- A blocked intake or exhaust pipe outside the house. Wasp nests in the fall, snow and ice in the winter, occasionally a mouse nest.
- A cracked or disconnected rubber hose running to the switch. These get brittle with age.
- An inducer motor that's genuinely failing, which is the expensive one.
Here's why this matters to your wallet. The inducer motor is a several hundred dollar part. The clogged drain line is nearly free. Both throw the same code. If somebody reads a pressure switch code and immediately quotes you an inducer motor without checking the drain, the hoses, and the vents outside, they skipped the free stuff and went to the expensive stuff. That's worth asking about.
Ignition Lockout and Flame Failure
The other code you'll see constantly is some version of failed ignition or lockout.
A furnace gets a set number of tries. It opens the gas valve, sparks or heats the ignitor, and waits to confirm a flame. If it can't confirm one, it shuts the gas off and waits, then tries again. After three or four failures it locks out entirely and sits there flashing at you.
The usual suspects, roughly in order of how often we find them:
- A dirty flame sensor that can't detect a flame that's actually burning. Cheap.
- A cracked hot surface ignitor. These are consumable parts and they fail on schedule. Moderate.
- Gas supply, including a shutoff valve that isn't fully open. Free, and more common than you'd think.
- A control board problem. Expensive, and the last thing on the list, not the first.
You can often clear a lockout by cutting power at the breaker for thirty seconds and restoring it. That's not a fix. It's a reset, and the furnace will lock out again if the underlying problem is still there. If you find yourself resetting it every night, stop and get it diagnosed.
Why Knowing the Code Protects You
Blunt version. A homeowner who says "my furnace won't turn on" is easy to overcharge. A homeowner who says "it's throwing a two flash pressure switch code and the drain line looked clear" is not.
You don't need to know how to fix it. You need to know the code, because it tells the technician where to start and it tells you whether the answer you get lines up with what the furnace itself is reporting. If the board says pressure switch and the quote says control board, those two things need to be reconciled before you pay for anything.

What to Do With the Code You Found
Write it down. Take the video. Note what the sticker inside the panel says that code means on your specific unit. Then check the free things: the filter, the drain line if you can see it, and the vent pipes outside the house.
Call somebody if the code points at the inducer, the gas valve, the control board, or a rollout switch. Call immediately, and don't reset it, if you smell gas or the code is a rollout.
